Cafe's in Korea

As an NSLI-Y summer student in Korea, you'll find yourself spending a lot of time at different Cafe's, whether it be to study, eat, cool off from the summer heat or to just relax. Cafe's are common hang out spots in Korea and are popular places to meet new friends and to practice your Korean. Here is a brief overview of the food and beverages served in Korean cafes and how to order them. Here is a video displaying some popular Cafe's in Korea.

Cafe's in Korea sell a variety of beverages and food. Common Beverages are Iced Tea, different flavors and blends of coffee, hot chocolate, smoothies, and frozen beverages. Common food items that are found at several different cafe's throughout Seoul, where NSLI-Y summer students are studying, are waffles, bread or 뻥(pronounced: bang) covered with whipped cream, cheese or yogurt, different pastries and the most popular 팥 빙 수 (pronounced: Patpingsu). 팥 빙 수 is also known as Ice Flakes; it is shaved ice with different toppings such as fruit, nuts, ice cream, and red beans and it comes in flavors like Green Tea, Strawberry, Mango, Green Tea and Coffee; it is also commonly shared amongst two or three people due to it's size.
When ordering in Korean at a Cafe, you place your order at the counter. It is actually simpler than it seems; all you need to do is say the name of the item you wish you order then say "주 세 요" (pronounced: jusaeyo). This mean, "Please give me..". For example,  복 숭 아 아이스 티  주 세 요 (pronounced: Poogsungee Ice Te jusaeyo. This means "Please give me Peach Ice Tea. It's as simple as that.
